Magic: The Gathering Apprentice

Magic: The Gathering Apprentice is a free program you can download to play Magic online. It might not be as pretty or flashy as the Wizards-created Magic Online, but MTG Apprentice doesn't cost you money to acquire cards. Basically, you have all Magic cards at your disposal with MTG Apprentice, as long as you have all the set updates.

What can you do with Magic: The Gathering Apprentice?

Play Magic, what else? You can play solitaire, play with friends online, or participate in leagues. Once you've downloaded Magic: The Gathering Apprentice, take a look at the walkthrough/guide if you need help figuring out how to use it.

While Magic Online knows rules and will automatically keep track of things like triggered abilities, Apprentice will not. It's more like a physical game where you have to keep track of everything. For example, if you've been dealt three damage, you have to decrease your life total by three. In Magic Online, that kind of stuff would be automatically done.

Another difference is that you can automatically find other players in Magic Online just by running it. In Apprentice, you have to pre-arrange a meeting in order to play Magic.
