Magic: The Gathering Online

Magic: The Gathering Online, or MTGO, is the official digital version of Magic: The Gathering. They offer the full software free for download but you have to buy digital cards to be able to play.

I've only tried the free trial account to get a feel of what's it like. I had to play Eight Edition theme decks. I didn't have trouble finding players to play. It was fun at first but I after a while I got tired of playing and seeing the same five theme decks over and over. The worst games were mirror matchups, especially blue versus blue. It seemed like those games could last long.

Magic: The Gathering Online can help you learn the rules of the game. It may tell you or show you things you wouldn't have noticed playing in a physical MTG game. It can remind you of triggered abilities which you may have forgotten about.

For example, there was this time in a prerelease tournament where I forgot to pay the upkeep for Kuro, Pitlord and drew a card. My opponent promptly called out 'Judge!' and asked if I could go back to my upkeep and pay the cost. He ruled that I couldn't. Now if this was Magic Online forgetting something like this wouldn't have happened.

MTGO can also give you the opportunity to play Magic when you normally couldn't. Sometimes it's just not convenient or possible to get the group you want to play Magic at a certain time.

What I didn't like were people who took super long to respond. Or people who decided to close their connection or not respond at all because they were sore losers. They could have at least conceded, but that's how it is on. Also, with Magic: The Gathering Online, you don't get that physical card feeling and actually seeing who you're playing against.
